I dont know of anyway to shrink the actual icon, but there is a hack that gets rid of the sidebar, allowing for more icons on the start menu. The problem is that it is over the whole phone, so you wont have vertical scroll bars anywhere. You can also make them smaller (the scroll bars). I got rid of the scroll bars and have three rows of 4 icons on my start menu. You can also change it to grid, allowing a different way to view the start menu.
