Default Starting to get a little freaked out...

So I needed a new toy, and bought a q9m on Ebay. I haven't received it yet, but reading through all of these problems worries me a bit. It seems like the amount of 9m owners have posted something has gone wrong versus "off without a hitch."

Now if everything is going right with your 9m, then you'd have no need to troubleshoot and post like crazy, but I've got to tell you:

My Black Moto Q (VZW) has never biffed on me, at all. I hope the 9m gives me similar love, but my Black Q has been very reliable. I never hard reset, and maybe soft reset once per month (if that). Anyhow, has anyone gone from a Q1 to a 9m, and everything worked fine?

Thanks...

i have not (yet) "promoted" to a Q9 but there are plenty of people that have good success with it, i would not worry so much...

Yes, I upgraded to the Q9m back in August 07, I haven't had any problems, My old Q1 would lock up sometimes but I think it was mostly software related, I don't have nearly as many application installed on the Q9m mostly because I learned what I used and didn't use on the Q1, anyway I think your theory that you read about alot of problems because people who don't have any problems don't need to post about them is true, The Q9m is definately an upgrade from the Q1 in many ways.

also take into account that most users don't seek help untill something goes wrong

and in a lot of cases they tend to post when things don't work.. not when all is working great.

Default Lots of lock-up

I've had two Q9ms. Both locked up on me pretty regularly even after using SKTools Autoclean feature until I disabled the "Suggest Word When Typing" feature in my settings.

My current Q9m was running okay until last night (about one soft reset per week). It locked up on me again last night. Now, I will have to consider installing the software upgrade which basicially means doing a master reset to see if that helps. Or, just take it back for a third Q9m.

Good luck with your new Q9m. I hope you have insurance on your account.

Default PS

I put up with all of this because I have read about similar experiences from Q1, PocketPCs, and even Palm OS devices. Blackberries are pretty reliable, but they don't do much. So, keep tweeking and rebooting, I'm happy about 85% of the time, and I can't find another device to do all that the Q9m does anywhere. So, you take the good with the bad.

I also have the "suggest words setting" turned off, never liked it and I can type faster with out it, There's another post that claims this feature locks it up. I did install the firmware update back when it first came out, I did notice a slight difference in overall speed and performance, never had a problem with it crashing so I can't comment on that.

my Q9m is a week old and have had no issues. But when you get it make sure you update the firmware through motorola and check out some of the speed hacks. Otherwise you'll think the phone is running slower than mollases.

I think tomorrow is my day for the Q9m. I will be rid of the horrid HTC Touch (XV6900) and either get the Q9 or go back to my very stable two year old Q1. It was evident in a few hours that the HTC had endless issues that I couldn't solve; and I have a BS in computer science and ten years with pda's and smartphones. I know a hopeless cause when I see it. LOL My "guess" is that whatever bugs the Q9 has, they can be solved as the basic design is sound. What's a shame is that there are a significant number of bugs in these devices whereas there are very few in a Blackberry. It's not complexity. I see glaring bugs in the VZW GIN phones. Imagine a phone that completely stops because of an email notification; can't even update the clock. How about a GIN phone that has a fixed "screen saver" that comes on after five seconds. Imagine how fast you have to type and think on that one. None of these devices is perfect but how much time RIM or MS took to work things out is what matters. MS is a software mill. Vista has updates every day and we are the test mules.
