Default Smart Backlight isn't so smart?

Hello there, I'm on my 3rd Q9m, and this time, my smart backlight isn't so smart. It won't take and turn on my backlighting when the lighting is dark. is there a way besides the enable and disable in the settings menu to fix it? I've been thinking about just disabling the feature, but it would be a pain to me and use up my battery. please help!

I find that this "smart backlight" isn't so smart either - but it may be because of the design. I noticed that the sensor on the top right corner is sometimes exposed to some light and it will think that there is plenty of light and there isn't. What I do is use my thumb to cover it and then hit any key again and usually - the keypad/screen, etc will light up as if it's pitch black. with that being said - it doesn't work all the time......but that's just something I live with....

I've noticed that from time to time, dust accumulates in the lens of the sensor which can effect the backlight's operation. That can usually be cleaned out with some canned air though.

just hit the text message app button which also is the backlight button. sometimes it works other times it doesn't.

I just disabled the smart backlight because I was having the same problem where the keyboard lights weren't coming on even in dark rooms.

on the original q there was a high and low illumination.
does the q9 have more levels?
when it's really bright outside does the light come on stronger so you can read it?
how is the readability outside?
it would be really silly to come on brightly in the dark. you don't need it bright in the dark but you do need the keyboard.
