Default Quick newb question about wifi

Just got an SDIO wifi card. I want to make sure that since my phone now says "WI-FI: (network): and has a new symbol at the top of the screen that I assume means that I'm connected to a wifi network that I don't need to change any other settings to NOT use data (through Verizon) when browsing the internet.

I may just call Verizon and try to get data disabled but I was hoping to be able to leave it on just in case I really really need to check something online when no wifi is around.

hey! I am in a similar boat; my SDIO card is in teh mail, and I can't wait! I too wanted to make sure connecting would give me no EVDO costs, but when I called, the guy said he could take me off evdo and put me on 1x but then pic message won't work AT ALL. I never use MMS, but I do receive the occasional 1-2, so I want that feature to work. so I shall just be very cautious when I get mine to make sure I am using wifi. How's the card? does it pick signal up well? does it drain battery?

just get a data block on the phone and you will have no worries
if you dont then make sure you set any email accounts to sync manually otherwise they will grab mail even when you are not on wifi

But as long as I'm connected to Wifi I automatically won't use any data for internet browsing, correct?

I have no e-mail accounts set up currently.

Not necessarily true. I thought I was using my wifi card after turning off my data plan with Verizon. $79 later I discovered that without a COMPLETE data block, your phone will still look for the network. With that, you will only be able to make phone calls and send texts. NO video or pic messages. I made it clear to Verizon that it wasn't in good taste to charge for services you cannot use...and I was informed that if I was not planning to use the phone for internet purposes, I should have picked a different phone. After 10 years as a Verizon customer...this likely will be my last contract with them.

i believe other users have been able to use the wifi card and not accrue and data charges if you go through the proper channels to set it up

I do not use pic or video messages and am very unlikely to care about not having them so data block doesn't make much of a difference to me there. As I said I would like to leave it unblocked in the very very rare instance I may need to access the internet to check something really quick.

For the time being I've done the reg hack which cripples the internet configuration in the registry and hoping that will be enough.

Only once did I somehow seem to be able to access the internet since I set that up and that is right after I installed my wifi driver. But very soon after internet connection wasn't working again. I get "Your Internet connection is not configured properly.. Please verify your settings in Connections" in IE and can't connect using apps that use the internet. But when I turn WiFi on everything works fine. If I ever want to enable data again I have the old reg values saved so I can just switch them.

I haven't been able to watch my data usage since verizon seems to update it ridiculously slow. Last update was on 3/11 (like a week after I got my Q 9m) and I've definitely used at least a little data since then.

At that point I was at 1800kb or about $27 because I didn't really know what I was doing. Verizon didn't tell me crap when I got the phone.

That was pretty damned rude of them to tell you if you werent going to use it for data you should have chosen another phone. I would have been irate.

I use wifi and have not data charges, but I implemented a data block from the phone (I don't use MMS), so my emails, etc only work over wifi.
