So that's why i saved them, then updated my old phone with the new version of firmware from motorola (that whipes your phone out), then was able to sync it back up and my contacts, calender, and favorites all magically came back?

Sorry for the smart ass moment, but you're not making any sense to me. I have NEVER owned outlook. Ever.

I use Vista Sync Center at home and it would not sync any mail/contacts/calendar/task until I setup my outlook then it gave me all the options to sync with Windows PC. Maybe you had Outlook Express setup?

Are you sure you don't have Microsoft Office (word,excel,powerpoint.etc.) installed on your computer? Or did you?

there are only 2 ways to "automaticaly sync" it is if your using Activesync(w/outlook) or sync to an Exchange server. Using Wireless sync you have to set it up and activate it to run... I'm pretty sure it won't auto sync by itself.

Speaking of ActiveSync when you say the [] contacts box is grey'd out do you mean on the phone "activesync" or the computer "activesync"?

on the computer, in the options for the phone. The list of what to sync. That box is greyed out, and uncheckable.

Is there a free version on outlook I can use? And I use Open Office on both my computers, so no, no MS office on either computer.

And I have tried to sync the contacts on both my Vista laptop, and my XP desktop to no avail.

L0c0 is correct, the only way to sync your contacts is with outlook. Outlook express will not work. Active sync (or WMDC in Vista) only makes the connection between the phone and the database.

So let's back up. How did you originally get your contacts onto your phone? The database must have been somewhere.

Oh, and which computer did you sync them on?
