Or does the phone use the POP information on its own? |
There are 3 different ways:
1 - have your outlook at home get the gmail using pop3; then have outlook forward those emails to Verizon's computer (using Verizon's wireless sync monitor). Your phone then uses its wireless sync component to download the emails from Verizon's computer. In this scenario, your computer needs to stay on all the time. I used this way successfully for 2 years (with the samsung i30 prior to the q). You won't get html email support because wireless sync doesn't support it.
2 - have Verizon's computer download the email from gmail/pop (this is setup on wireless sync also); then have your phone download from Verizon's computer using its wireless sync program. I believe the downside here is that Verizon's computer only checks gmail every 15 minutes. But, you don't need to leave your computer up and running. I'm also not sure how the gmail would interact with your home computer i.e. if you delete emails from the phone, if your computer has also downloaded them, I think they would still be there. Essentially, I think your mailboxes between your computer and phone aren't coordinated, and you don't get html email support.
3 - have your phone download directly from Gmail/pop. I believe you can set it to download automatically (like every 5 minutes if you want). In this scenario, you have the downside of not having the mailboxes coordinated. You do get html emails in this scenario. you setup your gmail account and password in your phone email program.
I used to use option 1 - it worked very well for me, and my contacts and calendar and tasks were also synced - something I really liked. I now use a 4th option and pay for an exchange server service - it costs about $9/mo. and it works like option 1, but I don't need to leave my computer on 24/7 and I get html email support.
Hope this helps
