I was under the impression if just want "internet" gps, needing cell towers near by to use navigator, google or WL, then the 9c will do that. If you want to use loaded maps and use satellites only then an external unit is needed.

Again..could be way off base. The closer I get to owning one myself I will be needing to know! For sure though the 9m needs an external...

Yes, I'm wanting "internet" gps.

What confuses me the most is that I'm hearing the hardware between the 9m and the 9c is the same, so in theory I should be able to download software to make it work the same.

if it's the same as Sprint's Q9c; you would be able to do it without either Internet or an external GPS, if you use a program like Garmin mobile XT.
