Default Keeping Mail on the Server

So it sounds like WM 6 allows keeping mail on the server or not. On WM 5, though, E-mail is always kept on the server except for E-mail that you delete, which does get deleted on the server.

This leads me to a couple of questions about how this new option works.
  • Does turning the option off actually delete E-mail from the server after downloading it to the Q (so you can't retrieve it from your PC, too)?
  • Does having the option checked really keep deleted E-mail on the server (in other words, have you tested it by deleting an E-mail on the Q 9m, doing a Send/Receive and then checking your E-mail server to see if that E-mail is still there)?
Just curious....

I have not noticed a difference between WM5 and WM6 when it comes to email. On my GMAIL account the emails disapear after I read them and delete off the server as well.

On my yahoo small bussiness and my school email account it only deletes on the phone. This occured on both WM5 and WM6.

It really depends on the mail server. So play with settings on your email account. On my school email account it doesn't even mark the emails read.

I hope I have helped you more than confused you.

When the option is checked the email (gmail account) remains on my server even when I delete it from my Q. But!... for whatever reason the Q will not download the same email again even though the email is still sitting on my server. It's as if the Q knows I already got it once and won't retreive it again.

Now as I type this I have 2 new emails in my Yahoo account - that I am looking at on my PC that I have not opened - that my Q is not retrieving. Even when I go to do a manual send/receive on the Q it is not getting them. What the heck is this?

I just sent another email to my yahoo account, waited a few did the manual send/receive on the Q and nothing. Went to my PC and there it is. This is no good. Anyone got any ideas?

Do you have a yahoo small business or premium account? If not, then Yahoo will not allow your account to do the whole POP thing.

Default WM 5 vs. WM 6

I don't think GMail's POP3 implementation is "standard", so let's forget about that for now.

Is your school account a true POP3 account? Using a POP3 account on my Web host, when I delete an E-mail on my WM 5 Q (and do a Send/Receive), the E-mail is deleted on the server.

I don't know whether it's a server implementation issue or a Windows Mobile issue (my WM 5 iPAQ hx2795 Pocket PC has options to control when messages are actually deleted), but I generally like the fact that deleting E-mail on my Q ends up deleting it on the server. I just which I could create new mail folders on the Q like I can on my Pocket PC.

I'm thinking it is server because it doesn't do it on my school's account unless I change the POP3 settings on my school email's account (they encourage us to delete them to free up space).

I am with you on wishing we could create additional folders. More so because my yahoo small business account (which I check via Outlook on my phone and laptop) leaves me with about 50 to 100 emails a day that I like to save in various folders. So it would be nice to have those same folders in Outlook on my phone.
