Default Dialing 1 while on an automated call takes me to voicemail

I've noticed a very annoying behavior recently when I'm calling any company and trying to navigate through one of their automated phone trees. Whenever the automated phone tree asks me to confirm by pressing the number 1, the cell phone immediately disconnects me from the call and takes me directly to my Verizon voicemail and asks me to enter my password. Originally, I thought I was being accidentally directed to the company's voicemail, but this is now happening with almost every companys' phone trees so it leads me to believe that it's a problem with the phone. I've already tried rebooting the phone, but no luck. Any ideas on how to get this to stop?

go to Start > Settings > Phone Settings > DTMF and make sure that is set to short. other than that, make sure you are just tapping the key. Not holding it in.
