Yes. It's normal. It automatically switches between the networks. You can set it to just stay on 3G if you want.

Enable band selection:
By doing this you can pick automatic/North America 3G/GSM W850/W1900(3G) 850/1900(GSM) 900/1800 (GSM)
1. Go to Home Screen
2. Type *#1546792*# and then send
3. You will see new screen that indicates that Band
Selection was enabled
4. Now you can go to Settings/Phone/Network/Band
Selection

Yes, quite normal. From 3G to GSM, its called a soft handoff. And from GSM to 3G, its called a hard handoff. At first, AT&T couldn't get the hard handoff to work without dropping a call, but it has since been figured out. You get the benefit of 2 technologies, and essentially, 2 networks

Well it seems on my phone the icon[3G,E,G] does not go back up once it goes down. I thought maybe it was just my phone

I know it can be done. Because I've started a call in EDGE, and been bummed out I can't use data too, only to have it switch, and map something out too. Its pretty neat.

It just depends on the db levels of the 2 signals. It constantly looks for better signal, and attempts to pass it off when its necessary. In my house for example, the signal is constantly bouncing between EDGE and 3G. A little annoying yes, but I look on the brightside of things, the fact that my networks are "fighting" for me, he he

Yah it sucks when your in an area with low 3g coverage. I usually set it up this way when I use Slingbox or skype. Both of which requires a constant 3g or higher connection to funtion smoothly.
