Is there any reason I can't see these files for text message tone? Is there any way to fix this?
For text messages and other alerts (other than ring tones) you have to move them to: Application Data\Sounds.

It was useful to me! The ringtone thing never bothered me enough to hack the registry until recently. I was scared to go in there and really bullocks something up. I followed your instructions/pictures and it was like 20 seconds and done! It was so easy I'm slapping myself for not doing it earlier!

The screenshots really helped, mexiken, thank you.

I'm glad they did. Some people prefer the visual approach.

Glad you got it. Enjoy.

I'm not familiar with the Q or Q9M, so I'm not sure if this will apply or not. It seems the Q9H is limited to 600kb for ringtones, but ATT goes a little further and sets the limit at 299kb. I was told the carriers can set their own individual limitations and thus it may vary from carrier to carrier. Anyway here are the instructions I received:

Go into HKEY_CurrentUser --> ControlPanel --> Sounds --> FileSizeLimit ( it's a DWORD value) Delete it. Easy as that and now you can enjoy your MP3's without the size limitation.

Now, I thought I was supposed to delete just the DWORD value, but I couldn't get it to take (I deleted the DWORD value but went back to check and the same value was back), so I (nervously) deleted the entire FileSizeLimit. No problems with mine - I loaded up some large MP3's and they show/play.

Again, this was information that was passed on to me so I don't take the credit for it, but thought I'd pass it on and share the wealth. Please use at your own risk!
This is just what I needed! I have a current thread about not being able to save ringtones made with Vito Ringtone Editor in my sounds folder. I was only able to save 2 songs and noticed they were small files. I searched for a hack to increase the allowed size of sound files for ringtones and found this post. Thanks so much for this! The only thing that was different for me is that I coiuld not delete the DWORD. I had to make it bigger, so I just added a couple zeros on the end! That worked! Thanks a mil! jb0615

Default Can't Find "FileSizeLimit"

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong...
  1. I've downloaded the PHM Registry Editor.
  2. Went to HKEY_CURRENT USER
  3. Clicked on ControlPanel
  4. Clicked on Sounds
  5. Could not find "FileSizeLimit" folder
  6. I pressed the "Values" key on the lower left of the screen where there are two options: AllSounds & Ringtones. I searched in both of those folders, but neither gives me a "FileSizeLimit" folder
Okay, seriously...what am I missing? The original post in this thread makes it sound so easy & it probably is, but I've searched everywhere and still no luck.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

well its not a folder its a file (DWORD)
and the point of the hack was to delete it so you can use any size file

so if you dont have it you either: dont have a Q9h or its already been removed and try to use a file over 300kb

When you get to the Sounds folder, scroll ALL the way down. It's past the subfolders.

Here is the updated link for removing the ringtone limitation. We've undergone a radical transformation, and the forum now uses Vbulletin, enjoy !!!!
