Default Instant Messenger in Q9h won't shut off!

Hi,

I have a new Q9h (purchased about a week ago) and the Instant Messenger won't shut off. I can "kill" it with the application manager and within a few minutes it will open itself and turn my screen back on. The screen will time out and turn off, and then the Messenger will open itself again (or if it's already open it still does this) and turn the screen back on. I can only assume that this is draining my battery and it's also insufferably annoying.

Even worse, when I go into Settings > Global Settings (or even Community Settings) I can't see the text that accompanies each "check box" -- the box is there, I can check and uncheck it, but the description of what turning that option on/off does is completely blank, just a white screen. I also can't see the text underneath the sign on screen for what I think is "save my password."

I can't stand this and it's driving me crazy, anyone know what is going on here? I am at the point where I would almost prefer to just uninstall the instant messenger than have my battery drained and deal with this ever-opening application.

Thanks in advance.

I found this post as I was trying to figure out why this was happening on my Q9H as well. I'm not really sure what happened or how it got in this state. But try this: When that annoying screen pops up again, hit the Menu softkey. Look to see if there is an option of "Sign off all and exit". Normally this option isn't there if you aren't signed into one of the IM services. I choose this option and it killed the IM program and I never got it to pop back up. I wasn't signed in at the time and I was plugged into my laptop when these screens kept popping up. I was logged in to AIM earlier, but I rebooted the phone and I don't have Start IM on Powerup enabled. Somehow it looks like the phone thought I was logged in, even though I wasn't. Hopefully this will help.

Thanks a lot for the info. I've tried "Sign Off All and Exit" and it still pops up like normal. I'm going to try to sign out of AIM on my laptop to see if that makes a difference.

Does your screen turn on for no reason too, even when you have messenger [temporarily, haha] turned off.

I just logged out of AIM on my laptop and it made no difference, the window still pops up and turns my LCD back on.

When you go into the Global/Community Settings on your Instant Messenger program, can you see the actual text displayed in that window? I can't see the text, I just see the check/uncheck boxes with no description at the side of each like it's supposed to be.

When I log back into AIM on my laptop I get this IM from AIM:

AOL System Msg: Your screen name (MatthewDouglas2) is now signed into AOL(R) Instant Messenger (TM) in 5 locations. To sign off the other location(s), reply to this message with the number 1. Click here for more information.

I'm not logged on anywhere else but my laptop, including my phone, so I wonder what is up with that.

UPDATE: I responded to the IM above with "1" and the response was "You are now logged in at only one location" -- Since then, the LCD/IM client has stayed off for about 90 seconds straight (sadly, this is a big improvement).

UPDATE 2: Still going strong after 5 minutes, the LCD has been consistently off and the AIM program has not popped up by itself to turn it on.

UPDATE 3: I turned the screen back on myself and the IM client hasn't restarted itself, and the LCD turned back off after I checked and it stayed off for another 5 minutes and is still off. I checked again after that, no IM client to be seen, not even in the "Kill List"

I'll update tomorrow and hopefully I can maintain this thread as a conclusive solution for the matter.

Try this: log out of the IM client on the phone and exit out. Get on your laptop, sign on to AIM and wait for the "AOLSysMsg" IM from above, enter "1" as your response to that IM, wait for it to respond that you are "Now logged in at only one location" and see if that works for you.

Maybe we have the same bug in our software?

Bummer that didn't work. But I've only had this happen once and this about the only thing I can think that I did that cleaned it up. Maybe there is some other sequence or setting involved.

Yes, the screen turns back on when the IM app restarted itself.

Yes, I can see the text. Have you messed around with new themes or homescreens? It could be that you could just be seeing white text on a white background.

Here is the list that I see (x for boxes that are checked)

[ ] Enable Sound
[x] Auto Check for client updates
[ ] Start Automatically on Poweron
[x] Enable Tips
[x] Enable Background IM Alerts
[x] Enable Proxy

Connect Using
[ selection box here ] set to "The Internet"
[x] Enable polling

I get that message a lot when my laptop goes from wired to wireless. It also pops up when I do log in from my phone. I usually just kill the window because I know I'm not logged in anywhere.

It could be. Hopefully it will stay away. I've actually tried to recreate the problem with no luck so far.

What is the default homescreen called? I have screwed around with the home screen a little bit, so maybe this will fix it.

I also can't see the "Available Updates" when I do I windows Update through Settings.

It just says "Available Updates" and then it's blank below that.

UPDATE: You are a genius, sir. I can see everything now, thanks a lot.

One day later, it seems the problem is solved.

For anyone who experiences this same problem, do the following:

1. Get on a laptop/desktop that is connected the Internet and has AIM installed.

2. Log into AIM with the same account you have used on your Moto Q.

3. Wait for the AOLSysMsg to IM you and tell you that your account is logged in at multiple locations.

4. Respond to the IM with the number "1"

5. Wait for the response from the AOLSysMsg that you have been logged out of the other locations.

6. Kill the Instant Messaging client on the Moto Q.

Should take care of the problem. HTH

I concur with Mddough's advice. I was able to recreate the failing scenario yesterday and the "To sign off the other location(s), reply to this message with the number 1" method made it go away. I did not see the "signoff all and exit" option that I mentioned in an earlier post.

I thought I had the sequence down to recreate this at will, but I was unable to get it to happen again. At least now we know how to fix it if the problem shows up again.
