IM uses Data plan or Text?

You know, maybe I'm just too old for some of this foo fa crap. I just want a simple text messenging program. I don't need maps, shopping, traffic and weather. Both Live and Yahoo have all the foo fa that comes with it.

Isn't there some simple text messenger that:
1) Uses the data plan
2) I can get messages from Yahoo or MSN messenger friends
3) They can see if I'm on line or not.

It seems simple to me, maybe it's not.

I tried Palringo yesterday but apparently didn't have it set up correctly. I reinstalled it this morning and it appears to be working now.
