Default Help w/GPS setting to work with google map mobile

Hello there
I just switched from iPhone to Motorola Q today and I wanted to use the google mobile maps to work with my AT&T Q Global but I don't know what setting to use (COM and the other number setting) Currently at COM 4 and 14400.
I would appreciate any help.
Thanks

It should work fine right out of the box.

Just make sure you have the box checked "Set by Windows (Via Start --> Settings)

Then you have go back under menu and hit "5" to start GPS.

Done

Thanks for the info. The setting was set to windows but it did not detect.
Do you know if the setting is the same with Microsoft live?
Thanks

Yes, it should work right out of the box.

Do you have the AT&T branded Motorola Q9 or do you have the world version. I beleive the world version lacks GPS but has Wifi instead.

The GPS does work right out of the box using Google Maps, however, it takes a VERY long time to get the first fix. It's basically getting a cold start so it takes a while. Run Google Maps and try to get GPS location, it will usually timeout without a fix. Try right back again, and 2nd time usually gets the GPS fix.

There's workarounds that allow you to get a GPS fix faster, requires a 3rd party app that's out there. I'll find the links and post back later.

Ok, here's what you do. You need to download the GPSID configuration utility. Follow this link to the Modaco forum and download Paul's file: Microsoft_Smartphone_GPSID_Settings.cab.

Copy the CAB file to your Q and run the CAB file from the Q. It will install an app called GPSID Settings. Go into your Start Menu and run the app. Set the Program Port to COM3, Hardware Port to NONE, (I) set the baud rate to the highest possible (115200) and make sure there is a check on "Manage Automatically". Now, soft reset the device (just turn off and on) to make sure the settings take effect.

Next step, you need to download an app called GPS Test, this is the app that will kind of "kick start" your GPS so that it will be ready for apps like GoogleMaps and LiveSearch to obtain the GPS fix ALOT faster. Download GPS Test from here: http://www.smartphone-freeware.org/system/files/applications/GPSTest_1.04.CAB

Copy the GPS Test CAB to your Q and run the CAB file from the Q. It will install an app called GPS Test, go into the Start Menu and run the app. You need to configure it to find your GPS, so hit the right soft key labeled Menu, choose 4.GPS Settings, make sure you set your COM port to COM3, (I) set my baud rate to 38400. Hit left soft key labeled Save. Hit Menu again, 6.More, 1.Exit Program.

Now, go into your GoogleMaps app and under the Settings, make sure to select COM3. Exit out of GoogleMaps. Now, you might want to soft reset your device again, just to make sure all settings take effect.

Once you're back up again on the Q, start GPS Test first, it will begin to start up your GPS to obtain signals. It will actually say GPS starting... and then once it's got the lock, I think it says GPS Fix or something like that. From here you could just hit the HomeScreen button (this keeps GPS Test running in the background). Now that you know you have the GPS signal, run GoogleMaps and it should get the GPS lock quick.

Whew! Hopefully I got everything in here... tried to remember every single step I took to get this working on mine.

Post back if you run into any problems.

Strait out of the box, I went to www.wls.live.com and clicked "click here" on the right side, then selected "Windows Mobile 5 or later". I did this on my PC becuase it took too long to download strait to my Q. Then I Sync'd my Q and transferred the file. Next, I ran the program like I was on my PC. I walked outside and within 10 seconds, I had ditected the satalites and it showed me my location. I have been able to search for gas prices, movies, traffic, pull directions, find banks, anything Windows Live Search will do with ease (I am not tech savy and I have owned this, my first, smartphone for about a week). The only thing I cannot figure out is how to get it to notify me when my next turn is coming up with a voice or a chime or something. Other than that, this is wonderful!!!
