Default Battery Drain?

Once you're back up again on the Q, start GPS Test first, it will begin to start up your GPS to obtain signals. It will actually say GPS starting... and then once it's got the lock, I think it says GPS Fix or something like that. From here you could just hit the HomeScreen button (this keeps GPS Test running in the background). Now that you know you have the GPS signal, run GoogleMaps and it should get the GPS lock quick.

In doing this you are leaving the GPS signal open and this allows for a faster battery drain. Am I correct??

I tried the app, and enabled the icon. You're right, it does kickstart the GPS. Too bad I couldn't find the setting to make GPS work on it. I believe it was removed and only works on AT&T Navigator.

The program, while I was hoping would kickstart the GPS faster, didn't. It works about the same as GMM or WLS. GPS Test works faster, and Garmin Mobile XT works faster still. Don't know why, but with that app, I can get a lock within 30 secs-1 min, even in my room.

yep, i am back to using gpstest. was just testing it to see if it was faster. it seemed to be faster for a few days. but not any more.

usually i can lock on satellites when testing. but, when you really need it, it sometimes decides not to cooperate.

Or worse, it loses the lock when you're en route. Pretty annoying. Seems most prevalent with WLS followed by Garmin.

Default can you disable or turn off the gps chip?

I've got the gps test working well, and the gps icon showing in the icon bar. However, when I first turn on the phone, I get the )))[x] in the icon bar right away, without launching gpstest. So, it appears that it's trying for a gps fix whether or not I launch a gps program right away. Is there an easy way to turn off the gps without launching gpstest, getting a lock, then exiting the program? My concern is that it's using a lot of battery power when I don't actually need it.

@viciouscircle
you might have the wrong GPSID cab downloaded from the modaco forum. Uninstall it and reset your phone and see if that fixes your problem.

i believe there are posts mentioning using GPSID on certain COM ports will cause problems. the one where you are always looking for satellites is good for starting GPS apps but terrible for your battery.

Thanks,

That may have done the trick. When I originally set up the gpsid program, I used COM5, because I used COM3 for something else. I've switched it to 3 and it seems to possibly have cleared up the issue of the GPS always searching!

A little something I whipped up so people wouldn't be confused.

Here it is.
