hello ajnabiji!
I downloaded Google Maps.
Start Google Maps and fire it up.
Press the Menu Key
Choose '5' - use GPS
The screen should show on the top right corner "Seeking GPS satellites (x).." [Here 'x' is the number of satellites the Smartphone GPS is able to connect to. The more open the area, the more satellites, the better location]

If you are looking for something like normal GPS - Telenav etc to actually 'show' you the way to a specific place...this 'free' GPS will not do that. It will just show you your current location on a google map. Couple that with a specific set of directions you have asked Google Maps to show. You will now see where you are in relation to the directions in Google Maps. If you go astray, correcting your route falls upon you. There is no way the free GPS will direct you to the right route.

Hope this helps.

Download and install Windows Live Search if you would like re-routing to happen when you go astray.

And for getting the GPS to work more easily, please do a search. There are MULTIPLE topics already about this.

I have gotten rid of all the bloatware on my q.
I have google maps which works. Also live search.
You can try Garmin. I heard it is great but I do not have time, as it comes with a lot of instructions on how to install and can be tricky.
Garmin XT is your answer, try doing a search for it and seeing what you come up with.

Windows live works great. I use it quite frequently. It doesn't do verbal directions, but it does re-route an give text route instructions. It also dings when a turn is upcoming.
