Default GPS and ATT 9h

Hello all, I have a problem with my 9h, the onboard GPS works with google maps, but if I try to use another program it fails to work. It seems to me that ATT has blocked the GPS form the users eyes. I have tried a unlocking program (MoDaCo.SmartphoneGPSActivator.) witch does unlock it but then the internet or mail quits working.
I would like to use Efficasoft GPS Utilities or something similar. Edit the Registry? Any ideas?
I know that com 4 @ 19200 can work when it is unlocked.

Thanks in advance, John

I am assuming your phone is locked? I am not sure on a locked phone there is a simple way to just hack it and make it work. I think you need the unlocked ROM and that could be tricky given we don't seem to have the US Q9h AT&T unlocked ROM available. Sorry can't be more help to you although mexiken sent me a link to a configuration utility that seems to virtually assign the ports and make it work. Hopefully he will be able to give you the link or the CAB file for it.

The phone being locked should have no bearing on the GPS chip. The chip, which we all at first thought was "semi-locked" because its tendency to not work smoothly with anything but Telenav (dubbed AT&T Navigator), is obviously unlocked, unfortunately, its just completely autonomous, which makes cold starting locks a pain. If AT&T wanted to "lock" the chip, it wouldn't make it work with a free program, like Google Maps.

You don't need the Modaco cab file. You don't want it being set to COM 4 anyway, seeing as how that port will stay open and drain battery, even after you exit a program that calls it. What you need are two main programs. One is GPS Test, which helps you lock signal.

The second, and more important, is GPSID utility. This is the UI that will let you set the virtual COM ports, so a program will be able to read the NMEA string from it.

You can do a Google search for both "GPS Test" and "GPSID", and you should find them. Actually, they're both in the Modaco forums, so just do a search in there.

Good luck. And let us know if you have any more problems.

I figured unlocked had no bearing on it but I wasn't sure, stupid shit happens all the time. But I knew that you could help and there you are ;)

Default Thank you mexiken it works now

Yes it works now thanks to GPSID which is set to com 3, 19200 baud, and automatic is checked. I will report back if it drains my battery.
Thanks again, John

It is my understanding that the 9h uses cell towers in its method for determining position NOT the satellites. Google maps has the option to use GPS (Satellites) and it looks for them but the number it shows is the number of towers it found not satellites.

The Q9h does in fact use Sattelite based GPS (discussed many times)
It also uses a data connection to download maps, which is why for the free softwares that a cell signal is required for it to function.
If you're looking for GPS use where there is no coverage, check out Garmin Mobile XT

Question

I was reading in Smartphones Magazine today at the airport that AT&T chose the AGPS format instead of the GPS standard. As well I tried to install Nav4All and it looks for the internal GPS and it did not find it. Installed it on my Blackberry and it found the internal GPS. Again it seems that AT&T is the only Q phone to use the AGPS solution.
