The phone was continually switching between the two and hence causing major email problems after it's email connection was being suddenly interrupted and suddenly switched.

I've now set it use HSDPA only and it's all working perfectly.

Congratulations. I am glad that you got it fixed and thanks for sharing your solution.

Glad you got it fixed, but that doesn't sound right. Either they explained it to you wrong or you explained it wrong to us.

3G (for GSM networks) is the simplified name for W-CDMA, which is a cellular technology for voice only, along with a data protocol, either UMTS, or HSDPA. UMTS is a voice and data system completely of the W-CDMA specs, which is the "3G" network. HSPDA is commonly referred to as 3.5G, and is a protocol that replaces UMTS because of its superior speed. However, using W-CDMA for voice only and HSDPA for data is also referred to simply as "3G"

Do you mean to say that you were using UMTS and HSDPA and it was giving your problems ???? You can't switch BOTH your voice and data to HSDPA, as HSDPA is only a data protocol.

Nobody explained anything to me, this is my own observation.
When I was in standby the display showed 3G and switched to H when I was accessing email.
Yesterday morning for a few hours the display was H in all modes and the email/browsing function worked perfectly as did calls.
Later in the day it started it's switching between services again so I manually set it to only use the H related service.
I've had no problems at all again.

Ok got ya. So then you're phone doesn't work with the W-CDMA data (displayed as 3G on your phone) but will with the HSDPA protocol. Good times. HSDPA is MUCH faster =)

Here in the states, it always says 3G, so you have no idea if you're using W-CDMA or HSDPA.

Actually it works with either 3G or HSDPA manually selected but as you correctly say HSDPA is much faster.
God knows what it's doing to battery life as you know 3G talk/standby time is much much less than GSM and I've no idea what HSDPA does yet.

You know, everybody seems to say that, and I've seen studies that agree with it, but I've never really noticed a different to be honest. Its starting to bug me that I don't notice....

If you mean battery life I cannot comment as reception is so bad on GSM in my area that I have to use the 3G or HSDPA and thus I cannot make a comparison.

Yeah thats what I meant. Apparently battery is drained on 3G much faster than GSM. But I haven't noticed a difference.

My only experience where I've been able to have reliable 3G service is in Vegas, and it seems like battery life was MUCH better on that network.
