It sounds like you are using Xpress Mail. The first account cannot be modified via the Settings menu. The few things you can do to that first account can only be set using the "XM Settings" icon in the Start menu.
To do away with that first account completely, you need to go to XM Settings, then hit the Menu button and Re-register or Reset All Data.
I had to do this just this evening. My experience is that my other accounts were not deleted or affected in any way, just that first account that I set up was deleted.
