I picked up my q9h today. Coming from a Treo 650. Love it so far...

HOWEVER, is anyone able to get isp.cingular as your APN to work instead of wap.cingular? I have the EXACT same data plan as my Treo 650...even the same 3g capable sim. But No go. only wap.cingular works in gprs.

Your account has to be provisioned for isp.cingular.com in order to get it to work. You can call in and request that - they may agree, they may not. The PDA smartphone devices are not provisioned for isp.cingular.com by default, only the laptop connect cards (I believe) - someone please correct me if this is wrong.

It's called "Outlook Data Unlimited" for 30 bucks. I have had it for years. If you guys are right, I guess they don't allow you to use isp.cingular anymore. Only if you pay for it.

If you really need isp.cingular.com access, the way that others have done it is to call in and say that they need to access their corporate VPN and it can't be done through the WAP gateway. Some posters over at hofo have been successful getting isp access this way on the PDA data plan.

I spoke with AT&T data tech support and was advised that isp.cingular can only be added to a teathering plan.

What's the advantage of having isp.cingular vs wap.cingular? Is it a significant difference/advantage?

The only real difference between the two is that with wap.cingular, you are assigned a private IP address and access the Internet using NAT translation. With isp.cingular, you are assigned a public IP that is directly routable back to the mobile device.

I have been using the isp.cingular setting on my device. I'm not real clear why you are choosing to use this setting on the device. The intended purpose for this apn is when using the device as a modem for your pc or laptop. Other than this when compared to the wap settings the speeds and access are the same. If you are having problems with slower speeds you may try bypassing the proxy as this does tend to help. Also, if you are not paying for the at&t data connect plan specifically which is 59.99 a month you are not paying to use the device as a modem. Also if you are simply using the media works plan on your line with this device the isp apn is not provisioned and will not work until you change it to a pda enabled plan.

The isp does provision with some pda specific plans but not all. As of this June when I left the company the current pda plans in effect did provision the usage of isp.cingular.
