Here are a few articles - some technical - about the history of CE and Windows Mobile. Some of them reference the touch-screen interface, but the principles are the same:

One thing we did has been pretty contentious. Along the way, we got feedback that users didn’t mind letting us manage the memory for them, but they really wanted a way to say, “I’m done with this. Make it go away.” So we put a “go away” button in the upper right corner of PocketPCs. This button just sends the application to the background. It doesn’t close it. If the system needs more memory while the app is in the background, it’ll close the app. But, if the system doesn’t need more memory, the app will stay in RAM and be ready to come back quickly the next time the user needs it.

Required: Graceful Application Shutdown

Because applications will be shut down by the Shell, without the user taking any explicit action, applications must shut down gracefully. This means not displaying any dialog boxes or other UI; not consuming excessive CPU time; and not consuming significant additional memory while closing.

So, to answer your question about timing, the OS will not shut down an app unless it needs to, due to memory shortages, so it is quite possible that PIE will stay running for days. However, what bugs me about this - and this is an app that ships with the OS!! - is that when it is shut down like this, it does not save the state of the app at the time. If I relaunch after it has been automatically closed, I am likely looking for it to go back to the last page that I had loaded in the browser, rather than to my start page. It just makes you shake your head that Microsoft's designers were not more forward thinking about this, particularly when we are now into our sixth or seventh release of the OS!

While true, the way they've described it the app builders can also be aware of the issue and deal with it. The apps are not being killed mid-process, they have a chance to exit gracefully. In the case of a web browser, it could remember where you last where when it closes, and reopen to that when you launch the app again.

I still agree that WinMo should at least have an option to disable this feature but as they've made app builders aware of it, the app builders can deal with the issue as well.

ad me to the list. it started to happen to me. can't find a cure. If you use Smart Tools, there is an option to "Exclude" a running ap. that seems to help. Only thing is, you won't see it if you click on tasks. You have to do a couple extra steps to close it. Now that I think about it, it didn't start happening till I put Smart Tools on.

You go to Processes and exclude it.

Use the task list in Smart Toolkit, and Exclude it from the list.

Its a free app. I am not certain this fixes the problem. they stay open longer. I don't know of a way to do it without it. Aim almost made it 24 hours. It closed on its own.
