Setting .mp3 to alerts?

Heres the situation:

I figured out how to set my .mp3 ringtone up without much hassle... but I cannot figure out how to set a .mp3 as alerts for e-mails etc.

I tried searching for the location of the stock files and copied my .mp3 to that directory and it still does not show up.

What is the trick?

copy it to the my documents folder or in the root of your storage card..... also please search this hasben discussed over a hundred times

just figured this out myself the other day. you have to put the mp3 in the application data/sounds folder. then it will be visible in the alerts section.
