Default ringtone formats

I had seen on a youtube video on how to cut songs down to make ring tones. It said to save them ".wav" but in a post here on EQ it was said to make sure you save them as "mp3" . What is the diffence and does it matter which one you do? And is there a diffence in the sound? I am very new on this stuff. Also is there a big differance between the Q and Q9C as far as stuff that is on this forum for possible downloads. I have Q9C.

I use MP3 mostly because they take up less space. Most people can't tell the difference anyway (quality wise)
I do recommend to use a program like audacity to crop the files to around 25-30 seconds (or 3-5 seconds for text/email alerts)
Much (but not all) of the software available for the Q1 will also work for the Q9c. Generally a good search will yield the answer for you.

Original music is a sampling of waves and in the end converted to digital format. Music in the .wav format is the highest quality (with respect to high sampling rates); However, .wav files are uncompressed and on average take up 10 mb per 60 seconds.

MP3's are digitally compressed .wav files. You have 99% quality retention with much much smaller file sizes. A regular 3 minute .mp3 file is on average around 3-5 mb, whereas, that same file in the .wav format can be up to 30-40 mb. This is why mp3's are much more popular and why people prefer them to .wav files.

Your q/q9 can support both formats.

Not to go OT, but for the audiophiles I have a Tascam DAT (digital audio tape) recorder that records in .wav format. It takes a whopping 58 MB per minute.

*back OT*
Basically when it comes down to it, unless you're planning on outputting from the phone to an excellent sound system go .mp3
For ringtones it doesn't matter that much at all, most ringtones that you would buy are encoded at a bitrate of about 32kbps. Not good for listening to the whole song, but it works just fine for a ringtone (saves even more space too)

I haven't used either (yet) I've heard good things about audacity though.
Personally I use Steinberg's mp3 Pro (don't bother looking, it's not made anymore) Steinberg is focused more on the professional aspect of audio (cd mastering and such)

any way, there are many different programs that you could find to do what you're looking for (many of them free too)
basically just find one that you like.
