I have the number of fixes set to always on, the time between fixes to 1 second, the performance set to 16 seconds, and the accuracy set to 1 meter. It's been working well with those settings for about 6 months.

Do you know what the significance is of the performance setting by any chance?
well since it came with the accuracy initially set to 256 meters, Yes. Basically with the settings I have it works as well as an in car GPS (until I lose data signal but I'm working on that part)

that part's easy actually, but not cheap. You can get garmin mobile XT, Copilot, or TomTom has a smartphone offering too. Those come with the maps for the entire country. Of the 3 Garmin's is the cheapest (I think) @ $99
