Default Battery Life - NOT THE USUAL - Data Calls?

I'll try to make this brief but complete.
I have recently been suffering with short battery life. I've had the phone for 6 months and it has been fine up til the last couple weeks.
There are two things that I have noticed: 1) the display never goes off (it's always lit up) even if I push the message key for a sec. the screen goes off, but then comes right back on. I have the timeout set for 15 seconds, via the power mgmt. screen 2) the signal power indicator icon (up on the top right) always indicates "data call in progress" which is the signal bars with a litte left-right arrow symbol above it.
I suspect these two things are somehow related, and both related to the poor battery life.

I have NOT made any changes to any settings. I did a master reset. I have two extended batteries and both display the problem, I am not a constant user of lots of stuff; maybe a dozen brief calls a day, email checking via Active sync as items arrive, but not tons of email.
Also, I did the 6.1 upgrade after the fact, and that did not change anything (I didn't think it would).

So, any ideas? Does your 9c display stay lit all the time? Is your "data call" icon always there?

Befuddled!

Nm, reread your post...

Did you try changing the power settings for the display timeouts to various values to see if it resets (set the display timeout to Never, exit power settings, set display timeout to 15s)?

After that I might try enabling or disabling the smart backlight and see if that does anything.

I had an issue one time where the power management settings for the backlight wasn't taking affect for some reason. But a manual re-setting of the timeout fixed it.

my screen doesn't stay on. but those arrows don't indicate data use. the PDA Icon indicates a data call. the arrows only indicate that the phone is ready to send or receive data.

I'm not sure what your 1st statement "Nm, reread your post..." means.
I did try all of the changes you suggest to no avail.

Thanks for the reply, and letting me know that your display does not stay on. for the Icon, I guess it depends on what you read. According to the MS website (http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windowsm...one/icons.mspx
that icon means "data call in progress" but I do see that in the Sprint 9c manual it says "...ready and capable of making data connection".

Still befuddled...

The two arrows definately indicate "ready to send and recieve data" when its actually sending and recieving the icon changes to what appears to be a small computer. The backlight issue may be the problem, since you said you havent changed any settings, how about software? Did you install anything that may be messing with the smart backlight's functionality such as candlelight? Did you do the master reset via the icon in system tools? Since you already did it, you may want to try it again by turning the phone off then holding the center button while turning it back on. That one REALLY gets it back to how it was when you just got it... no registry settings are retained.

Well, interestingly, I think I found out what the problem is. It seems the SD card is causing it. I have had a 1GB card in the phone since day 1. Don't use it for much but it has not seemed to cause any problem. I was going down the line that maybe a key was stuck down so I was "adjusting" all the keys (mashing them a bunch) and the thought struck me to take the SD card out for some reason. Bam, problem solved. The display goes blank on timeout as per usual. the card works fine in my Laptop, re-formatted it there and plugged it back in to the Q, and the Q does not recognize it, then the display stays on all the time. So now I have to figure out if it is the card or the Q.

can you format the card in the phone? sounds like you had some program installed on the card and the system is looking for it and it isn't there.

dafoxs - No, can't format it in the phone as now the phone does not recognize it. Well it recognizes it, just not in the manner I would want it too! In other words, the phone starts acting up when I put it back in, but does not "see" the card.

I need to get another card in there to see if it is the slot or the card... I have had cards before (not mini) that would work fine in once piece of gear but not in another... Who knows what the hell these card manufacturers are doing?! Seems like it would either work or not, AND keep doing so indefinitely, I mean its a chip right? How many other devices do you have that flake like this? ehh...
