A way to completely turn off data roaming?

This is very expensive...

today it warned me when I wrote an email while data roaming, and I thought I said whatever you need to say to not go ahead, but it went ahead and synced right after anyway:O

how do i avoid this?

I don't know if there's anyway to completely avoid this. There is a Data Roam Guard under Start-->Settings-->More-->More-->PCS Vision, but it seemes like you already have it on if your Q prompted you. Have you checked to see if there's anything in the Hacks thread?

isn't data roming free in the us? I know that I am not charged for it

I don't worry about it myself, as I believe it is covered by my SERO plan (U.S. roaming, anyway) . . .
