Default Q, a MAC and Sprint.

Hey guys, just bought a Q and am pretty happy so far. I think I know the answer to this but I just want to double check.

Can I use the Q as a modem with sprint service?

The sales person told me yes.

It will really suck if I can't

Thanks Jason

Unlike every other curveball Sprint advertising has thrown at us regarding MMS capability and PowerVision with the Q, this one actually works - answer is YES.

Best option generally seen on these forums is a program called PDAnet (easy to find through a simple google search). This program allows your computer to use the phone as a modem (a mac can only use it via bluetooth, however, which is slower than usb tethering), and it will allow your "unlimited data" plan to work. If you do it via sprints software that should have come with the phone you have to purchase the $25.00 extra "phone as modem" plan.

I'm able to get PDANet working properly in Parallels through USB, but I have had no luck getting it to work via Bluetooth in OS X. I go into the phone's configuration in the Bluetooth control panel, choose the internet option, and when I go into the networking panel and try to connect with it, I get an error message saying a PPP setting is incorrect. Spent a couple of hours the other night fiddling with settings, and nothing seemed to work, so I just gave up.

Anyone have a step-by-step for connecting via Bluetooth on a Mac with PDANet? All the other step-by-steps I see involve the official tethering options from carriers, not using PDANet.

Look at that. PDANet is free through Bluetooth usage.

Well, I see that you connected. That's where I want to wind up. But I don't really see how you did it. By all accounts, it seems like I'm doing it right:

In the Q's Bluetooth properties on the Mac, make sure the option is checked to use to device for internet access
In the Network control panel, go to Bluetooth, in the settings add #777 as the number with a blank name/password
Leave the modem as the default Apple 56k
Uncheck the boxes for error correction and waiting for dial tone

Make sure PDANet is on on the Q, and DUN is enabled.

When I hit "Dial Now.." I get an error saying I have a PPP setting wrong. I've tried it on my Macbook and iMac and get the same result. I'm obviously doing something wrong

do you necessarily have to pay for the phone as modem option on your plan? i have the unlimited data plan as well and i've been curious as to how to get this to work on my sprint q and macbook w/o paying for the phone as modem option.

You are suppose to have a PAM package but they really don't monitor it. If they see a huge usage then maybe...

But just purchase PDANet or you can use it for free over bluetooth. If you want to use it through BootCamp in Windows to have the full speed of EV-DO then purchase it. It is really fast.
