I tried it through verizon and it didn't work. does it matter which network you choose? i have mine on the internet, i can get mail but just can't send it, i have all of the other settings set like mentioned above. any suggestions?

In the setup process do not allow the Moto Q to make the settings automatically. In the outgoing server put:

smtp.mac.com:587

This makes the .mac account use port 587 as the outgoing port. This trick also works for Tmobile/Starbucks outgoing server as well. I use it exclusively now.
