The start menu is a pain to use because it goes for so many pages. Does anyone know how to modify it so there are more icons per page, or a list instead of icons, or at least rearrange the icons so the most used ones come up on the first page?

Sorry, but I don't find anything in that thread to help. I'm not a techie. Can you explain?

it is suppose to lead you to a registry edit to change the Start menu to list. go to the Control Panel of this forum (UserCP) and then Edit Options and change the 'Number of Posts to Show Per Page' to 40, that way the links in the Hack thread will work as they should.

you are going to need a registry editor, for example PHM Registry Editor.

Well, I thought that was totally wrong, but it turns out to be only partly wrong. My "Posts per page" is the default (10, usually) and I've never had problems with posted links until yours.

However, it seems that the "Permalink" item in upper right of each post is dependent on how many posts per page are shown (which is stupid for something supposed to be a permanent link).

Setting the posts per page to 40 won't fix things, either, I don't think. For example, with my posts per page at 10, I created this link. It takes me to a post by wannaQ, which is the one that I tried to link to. If I set posts per page to 40, it takes me to a post by googliada. With posts per page set to 5, it takes me to post by Evanmichael.

The only way for those links to work is if everybody used the same value for posts per page. The links work for you and whoever told you to set the value to 40, but won't work for others who use a different value, and their links won't work for you. I think the safest thing to do is to leave the value set to the default, because that's probably the value that most people use.

If you only need to link to a specific post, and don't care about the following posts, you can click the number next to Permalink and use that. So here's a link to the Grid/List View hack that should work no matter how many posts per page you use.

Besides the Grid/List view hack already discussed, there are a couple of other things that you can do.

First, you can organize the Start menu by creating folders in \Windows\Start Menu and moving icons into those. That works best for programs that you don't use much, but still want to keep around.

Second, you can change the order of the Start menu items.
