Default Hacked Upgrades

While hacked upgrades do come out every now and then, remember that Windows Mobile is very device-specific. You have to customize the base operating system by adding drivers specific to the hardware in use and add any extra value-added programs.

So if Motorola doesn't offer a Q upgrade, I wouldn't count on a hacked version becoming available. And, even if one does, if you use your phone as a business tool, would you really want to trust that tool to some unknown hacker? Even if it works, who's to say they didn't add some extra "enhancements" like E-mailing your personal information back to them or spamming people over your wireless account? (I haven't heard of that being done, but if somebody has the skill to build a hacked OS, they probably have the skill to write a simple E-mailing program.)

Default WM 6 Differences

I almost forgot to help answer the original question. While some versions of WM 6 will support new resolutions (like 320x320 and 800x480), I don't know if WM 6 Standard (AKA WM 6 Smartphone) will.

The biggest differences in WM 6 Standard are probably the following:
  1. Word Mobile
  2. Excel Mobile
  3. PowerPoint Mobile
  4. HTML E-mail
  5. Text size changing in E-mail
  6. Voice Command built-in (I think)
  7. Windows Live
  8. Windows Update
  9. Calendar ribbon bar and appointment preview
  10. Contacts call history
  11. New calculator
See the pocketnow review for more information.

Default WM6 Upgrade

Let's email Verizon that we Q owners want the WM6 upgrade. You can do this through the Verizon website under "contact verizon"

It can't hurt!!

If enough people do it, it sounds like a great idea to me. I just got my Q last week. It always seems to be my luck: I should have waited a little longer?

IMO, they will never "upgrade". Just do a search in this site for "Upgrade" and see what a mess just upgrading WM5 has been. Lots and lots of problems. Noobs have no idea how to even attempt an upgrade---going ahead and plugging their new Q up to their old pc loaded with all kinds of viruses and spam...only to unplug and realize their Q doesn't work. How many posts have I read where the person just took their Q back? AND, VZW accepted it!!! I would not have. Caveat Emptor!

They will never allow an upgrade. You can stop dreaming.

Not entirely true. If I remember correctly, I had a samsung i600 and they upgraded from WM 2002 to WM 2003 so there is at least some history for an OS upgrade. Of course, if they think they can make more money selling new phones . . .

That's not the only Samsung phone they upgraded, either. I mentioned the i700 earlier and the i730 also got an upgrade, I believe.

However, the biggest issue is whether Motorola will produce one. E-mailing Verizon may show there's a demand, but they'd have to ask Motorola to produce one. Verizon doesn't create the upgrade, they just test it.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

However, your point seemed to be that Verizon would not allow an upgrade, and our point was that Verizon already has allowed them (albeit on other devices).

Had you said that Motorola won't produce an upgrade, we wouldn't have mentioned Samsung, but that's not what you said.
