Default The smartphone is dead unless WM is abandoned

I have owned a variety of smartphones over the years...from Treos to several Qs. Each had its strengths and weaknesses but all of them always seemed to be short of the resources needed to run efficiently. As I contemplate my next phone purchase I've come to the conclusion that any smartphones that use WM (5, 6....doesn't matter) is doomed to have the exact same problems for the simple fact that Microsoft continues to develop and push out an OS that is both bloated and so lacking in intuitiveness that it is nothing short of frustrating to use.

I used to be in the camp that would "deal with it," recognizing that new technological devices would be always be buggy and what not, but at what point does it become Microsoft's (and hence, the phone manufacturer's) responsibility to put out a product that does what it is supposed to do, whereby any layperson can use the device without having to hack into the registry just to get the thing running right? I've dealt with the last three versions of WM and they have all been nothing short of crap, with the same problems all the time.

I'm posting this here because the unfortunate situation is that that there are few other choices, and those that do exist suck worse. So at the end of the day it will be the end-buyer that needs to voice their opinion early and often as the device maker's develop future generations of phones. How many times are we going to shell out $300 for phones that need to rebooted (very slowly, I might add) several times a day just to "clear up" the memory? Or the OS simply crashes? And is ALWAYS slow no matter how much memory/horsepower these device makers put in these phones?

It's about time to end this charade.

so what did you decide ? or what exactly are you trying to achieve with this post ? this is my first Smartphone, had it for amost one year and i am very satisfied with it... i do not find it slow, nor do i reboot every day.. believe it or not i go weeks without rebooting. there is close to nothing that it can not do, granted mostly with 3rd party apps (just like the pc version of Windows)

but hey, if you don't like the Q/OS.. don't get one.

windows based smartphones are still fairly new, heck most carrier reps dont know how to use/debug one yet. Like with most windows based OS's..it will take time.

I've been using pdas since the first ipaqs and though this is my first wm6 standard or non touchscreen version - I find the improvements from iteration to iteration very encouraging. wm5 was an amazing improvement - wm6 not so much, at least its nicer to look at. I think wm6.1 will be easier to navigate but to me it looks like a dumbing down of the UI for mass consumption. everytime something lke that happens more users adopt but the core people who have kept the device going for years usually get left behind. I hope I'm wrong. in the end I believe that people who use the WM platform and those who use the iphone are mutually exclusive. the compromises from moving from one platform to the other are simply too great for me. but there are those who believe that simplier is better but the opportunity cost of that is no 3rd party apps and zero control over your device, because apple knows best what you need or don't need on your phone. - Einstein said that the goal was to make something as simple as possile; not simpler. the devices we're using today puts the computers I grew up with to shame. when we think about it that way it doesn't look so bad. in the end crying about something doesn't help and only causes others to complain further still or worse - begin to nitpick. I'd like to see this thread closed.

So it's better to just be quiet and accept whatever these companies force on the market?

The good news is that the walls are starting to break down. The deal between Apple and AT&T on the iPhone is a meaningful first step towards wresting control of the devices away from the carriers. Yet is it my view that WM is a fundamentally flawed product and I have a very hard time believing most people think it's fine. Those that do are just used to having to deal with inferior products.

1. We are not the people to talk to about WM being the death of a smarthphone. The biggest customers for WM are business who want their employees who need a mobile device to have an easy interface with Microsoft Office so their IT department can spend time doing things besides troubleshooting easy connectivity issues on client machines. Business customers drive the technology market.

2. Any machine, electronic device, logical processing contraption requires maintenance. To think that a smartphone will run ok on its own without proactive maintenance is foolish. Kill the apps you aren't using. Its like someone who has been running on their first install of an OS for three years barking about performance.

I'm glad we were all here to help you get this off your chest. Now please move along

2nd Closing this thread.

Well, I would suggest you attempt to attain perfection in anything and I will be sure to visit you in the ward.

My comment was direct at the thread starter, not at you, and in no way should anyone take any of it personally.

I deal with people all day long who want to blame someone for the fact that an electronic device failed.

They fail, they under perform, they bug out, lag, crash, freeze. its is a highly sophisticated electronic circuit with logical shift registers and calculators integrated into silicon and copper.

Its not gonna be perfect ever. Unless you have magical control over the electrical fields around you.

You can vote by not buying another electrical device until they are "perfect". Enjoy the campfire.

what products have you been dealing with exactly that are so superior? I wouldn't call not being able to use your own music as ringtones exactly wrestling control away from anyone except the end users. Apple is not the champion of the consumers. I don't know a company that likes to rip off their consumer base more. and unless you are ready to unveil a new operating system or start a full out boycott against all windows mobile products - you are part of the problem and not part of the solution. what exactly is the point of moaning about something like this? buy another device. offer an alternative; offer a solution if not then have a nice day and try to make the situation better by providng answers for other users not creating an atmosphere of disatisfaction and mal-content.
