| Cab installer to enable BT DUN support in the Q I created a CAB file that automatically puts the registry keys in place necessary to enable Bluetooth DUN support on the Motorola Q. Thanks to StolenPhone from HowardForums for documenting the necessary reg keys to make this work. - Install the CAB file
- Reboot your Q
- Dial ##342587 and hit Send
- Set the dialup option to Enabled and hit Exit
- Do a happy dance

After you go through this process, you should be able to pair your phone to your laptop again and it should automatically install a "Standard Modem over Bluetooth". Just create a Dial-up connection using this modem with a phone number of #777. No username or password is necessary. http://geektribe.net

| I'm tempted to post the animated "dancing baby", but I'll leave that to Tom.
Good to hear it works. Excellent news. Thanks to both StolenPhone and Jeremy for his post.
Good stuff.

| Does Verizon know where the connection is originating (i.e. from my phone) even though there is no username or password? I would assume they would since it is connecting from my phone after all. |

| I'm sure they do. My guess is that it's not different from when you launch IE, it initiates a call to #777 to access the network.
If I remember correctly, Verizon is expected to officially support BT DUN and you'll have a monthly fee for that privilege. There are more than a handful of stories online where customers were cancelled due to excessive data usage. Large file downloads, SlingBox are surefire ways to boost your data usage.

-Chris | Well that will suck, having to pay for that service. I guess that will apply to the Modem Link (usb) as well? Quote: |

And I use dialup sparingly.....I mean I have connected maybe 6 or 7 times for maybe 15 minutes at a time max, one time for 45 mins or so, just surfing the web mostly, downloaded a Symantec upgrade one of those times, like 100 MB total for that download. |

| VZW might know if you are tethering, but I would lean to "no they don't" more than they do -- when you run DUN - you are running just that, Dial-Up-Networking - which means the modem (phone in the case) is actually doing the connecting, as long as the username/pwd you send over your #777 connection match what the phone is actually sending, I would think it would be virtually impossible to tell if the connection was initiated from the phone or from a computer as the phone would be running a form of NAT while you were tethered ... unless of course the phone told on you. This is based on the assumption you aren't running any odd-ball protocols like Bit Torrent sessions/on-line gaming/non IP-SEC/L2TP/PPTP VPN connections/etc. One way around that of course would be to run a IP-SEC/PPTP VPN to a box, then run whatever you want over that VPN connection and they would be none-the-wiser (except of course for massive sustained bandwidth consumption) - any VZW insiders know for sure how detailed of logging VZW does/is capable of? I'm also basing my "they dont' know anything" assumption on how little information they've had in the past when trouble-shooting my problems... |

| Well my best guess on this is as follows. I worked for Sprint (Long Distance, not wireless) for about 7 years. If Verizon is -anything- like Sprint, they know exactly what is going on in terms of who you are when you connect. They may or may not have a way of telling if you are tethering. All depends. If the phone tattles on you and tells whatever is at the other end of the connection that it is acting as a -relay- ( or NAT ), then you are pretty much busted for tethering in the event they choose to look at the logs and find people that are tethering. I can also assure you that they know who you are when you dial #777 and hit send. Every cell tower, switch, relay, atm cloud, and router between you and the connection point knows who you are too, until you actually get -out- of their network. One of the things you have to have to network is a MAC layer address, and all MAC layer addresses are unique. If they have your MAC associated with your telephone ( which is more or less how they do it, data access or no ), they know who you are. My guess is that the MAC address is sent when you initiate the connection, they look up the account that has that address, determine if they have a data plan, if they are a valid / paid up customer, and THEN they log you in. Don't think Verizon just has an open door if you dial #777 from a phone and hit send.
So basically what I am saying here is that the phone company knows you at each and every piece of thier equipment that your transmission passes through (voice OR data). Are you willing to take they chance that they don't also record the fact that the phone is in NAT mode, and not the actual endpoint for the transmission? For my part, I am going to wait for the official plan before trying this. I know how the phone company is, and I would rather NOT take the chance. You have to remember that phone systems have long been the target of hackers and phone phreaks. The phone company records all kinds of stuff you would never guess they do. Security is a very high priority with them, and as such, there are a lot of things they track that tehy don't publicize, so they can more effectively take down people who intrude on thier network in an unauthorized manner.

| The thing I've never understood is that VZW sells the mobile office kit, advertises that you can use it to get online, but then tells you "you can't tether!!!" The tech-support people at verizon don't seem to have a full understanding either. |
