Any early feedback how the Alltel Q works? Is it locked down like verizon, or opened like sprint? Dows Java work on it? Hows the PIE? any weird software quirks?

Mine is working fine. No EVDO in my hometown yet (Greensboro, NC), but internet is solid. Alltel allows DUN, and nothing is cut back that i know about. Comes with Sharpcast for free, and a Handmark trial. I'm not a real power user, but no problems so far.

It is completly open. I love it. I'm even using mine with a BT GPS which they say I am not supposed to but I am not locked out from doing so. I love Alltel, especially since I have an option other than "Treo Trash".

I picked up the Alltel Q two days after they went on sale and I am very pleased so far. I was very close to getting a Treo but I'm glad I waited. I have been with Alltel ten years and I have always been happy with their coverage and quality and the Q has been no different. This is my first smart phone so I am still learning the in's and out's of it but the e-mail works great with Outlook ActiveSync and the web service is good. I do need to find a Java add-on and I will want to upgrade to a good excel,word, powerpoint viewer. I would love to find a program that would allow me to manipulate excel spreadsheets, since I use those heavily, but I don't know if that exists (anybody??). The phone works well and the controls are pretty intuitive now that I have been at it for a few weeks now. The speakerphone works great and eliminates any real need for a headset while driving (although I will still use one occasionally I'm sure). All-in-all I am tickled pink so far. I look forward to learning the rest of the functions to get the most out of it. BTW...this site as been very helpful with tips and accessories etc. Thnx

hey guys
i have a question,i have only had my q a few weeks and now i find out that i cannot picture or voice text,nor can i open email attachments
i called alltel and they said that i cant get any voice or pic texts unless i have them emailed to me,but it doesn't work since you cannot open attachments
anyone else having this problem

You should be able to download attachments if you "send and receive" after you open the message. It may have to do with the type of account you have (mine works on POP3). I can download if I select the attachment and then send/receive and it downloads and opens up. You might also want to check available memory and/or get a card to upgrade.

Blueeyeq.. Not sure if youve figured it out yet but if you havent, i have an answer to your question. To view Excel docs better and edit them, youll need a program called Documents to GO. Its talked about heavy on this board in places so a search should help you tons...

While This is one of the best phones I have owned, I do have a few minor complaints.

The inability to remove certain things (Sharpcast, Get Office Sync, A few Favorites) from the phone is annoying. If I don't want the software I should be able to remove the link to get it.

I have two other alltel phones (both are bottom rung phones) and while they get full bars at my house, my Q gets two at best. I thought this thing was supposed to have great reception. I do live in a small town in the middle of nowhere, but my Ev is blazing fast.

Settings on the phone seem to be inconsistant. Sometimes settings are saved and sometimes they revert to the default settings. Same with the battery life. Either it lasts all day or it goes for a few hours, regardless of usage.
