Default Q on a family plan?

Right now I am on a family plan. I called Alltel to see about getting a Q. They told me that all of the smartphones needed to be on a smartchoice plan because the family plan did not have the right codes on it. The thing is about 6 months ago I bought a Blackberry 7250 from Alltel and put it on the family plan. When I had the internet with the phone everything seemed to work just fine. I was wondering if any of you have a Q on a family plan or if it would work. Thanks.

I have a q as primary line and 3 additional lines of service. this is with smart choice plan. all four lines have 1200 min to share and unlimited everything else and the total comes to 210 to 220 per month. You dont get nearly as much stuff with a family plan which is why u should go with smart choice plan cause it has waayy more stuff with it and is cheaper in the long run. Of course, what good is all the minutes with weak signal and dropped calls but maybe the mol 3 update will fix this but I doubt it. Anyways, the smart choice plan comes with unlimited data which is the key factor for us q users.

Can't you add on an unlimited data to a plan. The reason that I want to add a Q to a family plan is because I share a plan with my parents, so it would cost a lot more to get a plan of my own.

No, when I got my Q Alltel said that smartphones now have to be on a smartphone plan. It may be different if you are not buying the phone/contract...though I am not sure. Here is a breakdown of mine just for example:

Q - $89.99 Smartphone (500 *shared* Minutes/7pm N&W/Unlimited Data & texting/My Circle)
Nokia - $20.00 add-on (500 *shared* Minutes/7pm N&W/Unlimited texting/My Circle)

My bill is roughly $130/mo.

I have a Q on a Smart Choice Family plan with 2 other phones. They are shared minutes so it can be done.

The smartchoice plan ended up being cheaper for me. We have 3 phones on the plan, and since the smartchoice includes unlimited everything and a nice chunk of minutes, we didnt have to pay extra to add nights at 7, unltd text/pic/web etc.

As of Feb 15, 2007 if you buy any smartphone at a discounted price through Alltel you are required to sign up for a smartchoice plan and stay on a smartchoice plan for the term of your contract. Theoretically, you can still buy a smartphone at full retail price and have the $29.99 unlimited data plan added like before. There are some reps who don't appear to know this and will tell you it can't be done but you just have to be persistent. I know of 2 people who have done this.

In the OP's situation with his parent's plan I'd probably buy one off eBay or something (it would be cheaper than the full retail through Alltel) and call CS and have it activated and add the unlimited data a few days later if they won't do it at activation.

Default Help with extra phones on Smart Choice Plan

I know this thread is old, but my question is directly related to having several phones on a Smart Choice Plan.

I would like to have 3 lines total, one a Q and then two others with regular phones for my family. I want unlimited texting for all three lines. Alltel's FAQ suggests that extra lines on a Smart Choice Plan cost $20 each and that unlimited messaging IS INCLUDED, which is the same thing told to me by an in-store representative. When I recently spoke to customer service, however, they told me that the $20 per extra line is for VOICE ONLY, and that unlimited texting on smart choice plan secondary lines is an additional $20 per line. Thus, two extra lines with unlimited text would add $80 to the total bill.

Does anyone have the correct cost information?
