Basic question on wireless manager

i added on my q to my family plan - no data plan. when i set up my email accounts i checked to never connect on their own.

i noticed on my status bar today that every minute or so the pda icon popped up indicated a data access. it will stay on for about 5-7 seconds and then go off.

my basic question is this: is the q burning my minutes each time the pda status icon pops up even though I have all the email accounts set to manual send/recieve?

I hope not, because if that is the case then that would mean I have to turn off the phone (via wireless manager) unless I am MAKING a call to avoid running up my minutes?

I messed around with the q some more and I think that once I access email it starts up periodically to try and access the email, even with the send recieve set to manual. I find that if I cycle the cell radio via wireless manager for a few seconds it kills this action. Looks like another step I need to remember while checking emails.
