Default alltel to roll out mol 3 in nov

just got back from alltel store. I asked how come I can only get 1x speeds on data and rep stated alltel has no ev speeds yet. Rep further stated roll out of ev speed for entire network scheduled for nov. as well as mol 3 update for nov. as well. Just passing it along. Ive been lied to before by reps from this store so take it as you like it.. nothing more.

Alltel has no EvDO speeds? What is he smoking? Maybe Alltel doesn't have Ev in your market but the Q runs Ev all over the west cost of Florida where I live. Alltel also has PRLs (40020) that they push to the Treo's and their data cards that allows Sprint Ev roaming. I have 40007 on my Q so I get Ev everywhere.

I am guessing that this guy was just saying they will start pushing the Sprint roaming PRLs to the Q' starting in Nov. My guess is there is a bug in MOL2 that is preventing them from going Ev and MOL3 will fix that. Like I said, I have PRL40007 on my Q and don't have any problems. Who knows.

Alltel does have EvDO. I'm never on 1x in Michigan except north while camping near Ludington or Muskegon. I was also told to expect MOL3 in August, but the rep mentioned Alltel had not committed to a date.

MOL3 is a software update for the Motorola Q. The Alltel Q comes with MOL2 out of the box. Verizon has had the MOL3 update for a long time and Sprint just released MOL3 about 2 weeks ago.

EvDO stands for EVolution Data Optimized. It is a high speed data technology. Alltel runs three different data technologys. QNC (14.4kbps), 1xRTT (144kbps) and EvDO (2.4Mbps). Alltel hasn't rolled Ev out in all markets yet but is expanding rapidly.

PRL stands for Prefered Roaming List. This is just a list of rules that tells the phone what cell towers to use in diferent regins. Cell providers negotiate rates with diferent providers and want to make sure your cellphone roams on the provider that they negotiated the lowest rate with. The PRLs have version numbers. To update the PRL on your phone you just dial *ACT (*228) then send. PRLs can also be pushed automatically OTA (Over the air) from time to time. Alltel pushs special PRLs so some of their devices. For instance the Treo 700wx and all of the data cards have PRL version 40020 which allows those devices to roam on Sprints EvDO network where Alltel doesn't have EvDO. Unfortunately Alltel isn't giving the Q access to PRL 40020 so we only get EvDO in Alltel's native EvDO markets. There is a way to manually upload any PRL version you wish to the Q. So I have loaded PRL 40007 to my Q which gives me Sprint Ev roaming.

To check your PRL version just dial ### send on the Q. The current PRL for Q's is 30008.

Thanks for the information ermax,

So what are the risks in updating the PRL code from 30008 to 40020? On the plus side you obviously get faster speeds but there must be some risks surely?!

Mind you, in North East Oklahoma I doubt I'd get better speeds using Sprint or Alltels network!

Craig
PS. Yes I am on Alltel.

Not sure if there are any risks. I guess Alltel could charge me roaming or something for using Ev. The thing is the Treo's have Ev roaming and they don't pay any more then we pay for our Q. I have read about people putting PRL 40007 on there PPC-6700's for months and haven't been billed. I should be getting a bill soon.. Lets hope I don't have any charges. I read somewhere that there is some problem with the roaming indicator on the Q that is keeping Alltel from giving us Spring Ev roaming. I have a feeling that MOL3 fixes this problem and this is why Alltel says they plan to release Ev roaming and MOL3 in November.

Time will tell.

Anyone with a Q should read this thread. It is very valuable.

Here are the directions I followed to load the PRL on the Q:
http://www.mobile-files.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=48711

And here is a link to download the needed Alltel PRL files:
http://www.corolada.com/prl/

The current PRL on the Alltel datacards and Treo's is 40020. I don't have a copy of 40020 and it isn't on that page so I have been using 40007 which is on that page. I also tried 40016, 40017 and 40023 but none of those gave me Ev roaming. So just use 40007 and you should be good to go.
