Default Alltel Smartphone Plan

I am really wanting to get the new Q9c when it comes out, but I really don't want to have to get the Smart Choice plan. I really love my Q for 3rd party app support, music and video player functions, but I just don't want it for data. That probably sounds dumb. But I'm wondering if if is absolutely required to get it. Anyone work for Alltel or know if I would have to get it? If I do have to get it, is it possible to sign up for it when I get the Q9c and get home and then call alltel and just switch back to a voice plan. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

first of all this issue could probably be solved with a simple search...discussed many times but if you want to not have to sign up the phone for the smartchoice plan than you are going to have to buy the phone full retail or buy it on ebay like me. You might be able to buy it with the service contract and then pay the first month for SmartChoice plan, and then register your old phone and then call back and re-register the Q under just phone and go through all the plan changing process. Although if you are on a family plan it might be cheaper to go with the SmartChoice plan...actually today I just put ours on the plan b/c it is saving us $80 a month ...Your decision now....

Hope this helped

Well,

I used to work for alltel and i still use alltel service and i use a Q.
i bought my Q on ebay, and what i did after i got it was i went in to the store and had them program my phone number in to the unit, and then had them switch the esn over. they'll give you crap for telling you the phone won't work right, and blah blah blah. its b/s. do not by any circumstance switch your plan. if you have an old plan like me (my rate plan is 3 yrs old) and you switch to a different plan, they will tell you that you can't go back. this is true, because the system locks out all the old rate plan codes when they expire.

i personaly have been using my Q for a year now and havn't had any problems and i bought an HTC for my wife this same way and set it up with alltel the same no problems.

it is my understanding that if you have a standard plan and add Axcess Web and Axcess Minutes you have unlimited data on your Q

I did the same thing... moto q off of ebay. I just kept my family 900 plan. When i use data it just shows up as minutes. it has its disadvantages - i have to use wireless manager to disconnect so i don't use up my minutes, and ihave to be careful durng peak hours, but at least i didn't have to switch to a more expensive plan.

i got my Q all programmed and set up and i noticed you said you have to use a wireless manager to disconnect? when does this come into account and is this something i need to do? my first smartphone, so i am curious to know. i dont want to incur a bunch of extra charges on my phone. if you have any suggestions for me, please let me know on here or email me at: writemehere@live.com. yes, thats my REAL email address...lol.

I also bought my Q off ebay and was on the family 900 plan. I use mine for texting so my previous Razr had the all Axcess pass which gave me unlimited text but NOT unlimited data.

TO Nelson:
What he means is that whenever he connects to the internet through PIE or whatever other app uses data the PDA Icon and the Data Xfer stays up until he goes into the wireless manager and turns his "phone" off so that it stops sending/recieving data.
I called alltel yesterday and asked about using the data and the rep i talked to said that data is free on nights/weekends because it is using your airtime. Charges will only apply if you go over your actual minutes on the plan. With no data plan, the time you spend on the net is counted against your minutes. For me, i just use data on nights/weekends and i have had no problems yet.

Informative

appreciate the help. i used PIE a few times during my nighttime minutes and then would shut off the send/receive through the manager by turning phone off/then back on. i checked my last bill and didnt see any charges for data or anything like that. my bill was the same.

sidenote: when i first got my phone, i was getting an average of about a day/day and a half battery life (which really bummed me out) but then one night i decided to wipe my phone clean and run the master reset. since then, i have averaged about 3 days a charge. for anyone having battery issues, maybe give this a try. worked wonders for me.

loving my Q.
