Active sync creates a network connection on your computer with a private ip address (169.254.x.x) to communicate with the phone. If you are using the same network space for your wireless connection it may be messing up your routing.
When the Q is connected, do an "ipconfig /all" and see if both your wireless connection and the Motorola Q connection are in the same address space.
It's the only thing I can think of.
