I'm sure they do. My guess is that it's not different from when you launch IE, it initiates a call to #777 to access the network.

If I remember correctly, Verizon is expected to officially support BT DUN and you'll have a monthly fee for that privilege. There are more than a handful of stories online where customers were cancelled due to excessive data usage. Large file downloads, SlingBox are surefire ways to boost your data usage.
