1) Up to this point, I did not have a high tech phone with internet, text messaging, and all of that. So, the first reason to get the phone was for that.

2) My kids and I do Geocaching. Its basically a hobby where you hunt down hidden items via GPS coordinates. Up to now, to do this, I would be carrying an eTrex hand held GPS, as well as a Dell Axim PDA with certian Geocaching software to hold information about specific caches in the area, and of course my phone for ..well, phone service. The software on my PDA could work with a builtin or SD card GPS, but I had not purchased one. I instead decided to combine all of these features into one device (or so I thought).

In addition, the eTrex doesnt do turn by turn navigation, so I thought I might want to have that functionality as well. With something like Garmin XT, it appears I could also have that ability in one single device.

3) Through Verizon, this device only cost 29.99.
