I have VLC media player that works with the device, but it is not novice friendly. I'm muddling through it, but am getting very frustrated. I have gone to the VLC website, but as I don't understand DOS the answers don't make a bit of sense. Any help would be great. I just need to get six years of tape onto DVD so I can upgrade and be done with it.

XP and Vista both have a decent video capture program called windows movie maker. however, usb won't cut it. You really should use firewire.
I also went from digital8 to minidv and did the same thing. There are services out there. Contact your local camera shop and they can help.
