I had a similar issue with system icons that changed to generic icons probably when I ran SK tools registry cleaner and didn't pay attention to what it did. Had to do a hard reset to get the original Windows Mobile installed but that meant reinstalling all my other apps, contacts, etc.
Now I make regular backups with Sprite Backup both to my work PC and to my SD card. By doing that I can do a hard reset away from work and recover to the night before since I backup at 2 AM "every day".
