If the other team did not go out and help, then the win would still have been celebrated. The celebration would have remained in some city, some state, USA's newspaper.
I agree with you that winning at all costs should not be rewarded. That isn't true sportsmanship in any sport.
However, I don't think that this article could be seen as winning at all costs, if the other team didn't help out after the HR. The rules would allow for the injured player to be substituted and the HR would only be a single. No foul play involved and probably an eventual win for the other team. It just wouldn't have made national headlines.
