Thanks Mirzet for the reply and that's what I ended up doing today.

I went to the Alltel store and the guy said it just needed to be reprogrammed. He entered the number and it now shows my proper number in the phone's information fields. After I left the store I noticed it still said it's in roaming mode. I gave it a bit and figured it had to do some updating. It never changed. My EVdo icon is gone and it's stuck at 1X too. I called *228 to try to update the roaming. The automated voice says it's on a Verizon system. I get the automated apology saying that the phone can't be updated at this time.

So.... I went back to the store. The guy said he probably needed to force to remain on home service for a while. He punched some buttons and handed it back. He said it should be fine but I noted the loss of EVDO again. He said something about the tower possibly having problems and that was it.

I'm wondering if that monster file has changed something that rendered this phone incompatible with our local system for whatever reason.

Any ideas....? New phone time.......?
