I didn't use the old Q, but here are some of the differences I'm aware of:
1) WM6 instead of WM5;
2) better keyboard;
3) GPS;
4) Docs to Go installed;
5) extended battery;
6) ability to power mini SDIO card for wi-fi
I've only used the Q9m with Verizon and the Q9c with Sprint, so I can't really recommend any other smartphones.
