Larger corporations will setup IMAP proxys to front the Exchange servers to the public internet. Alternatively, MS Exchange also will accept connections from http clients, so you could come at the Exchange with the IE browser instead. Either option requires your IT department to configure the server accordingly, but if they are worth thier cost they should be able to set that up quite easily. Let me say that any company today that doesn't have a public internet front end mechanism to interface to MS Exchange is living in the Dark Ages.
