Things have been relatively quiet, but it appears Motorola has been hard at work on their next generation of smartphones. A group of smartphones are scheduled to hit Verizon Wireless in 2009 and represent a major departure from the Moto Q. No specifications were included, but more than a few photos that are worthy of excitement courtesy of BGR. The codenames for these new phones are Flash, Rush 2 and Calgary.
Google has just released Google Maps for mobile version 2.3 and now includes an option for Street View. Street View had been previously released on the iPhone, Android and Blackberry. This is a must have for any Motorola Q owner. Note: Use of Google Maps does require you have a data plan.
When it rains, it pours. More photos have surfaced of the new Motorola smartphones codenamed Attila and Alexander. It was just days ago that we saw rumored photos and specs for Attila. Expectations are these new Moto smartphones will release sometime in 2009. UPDATE: According to DigiTimes, Compal Communications has received orders for two Windows Mobile-based PDA phones, codenamed the Alexander and Attila, from Motorola. Both phones support 3.5G and WiFi. Alexander features a slide-out keyboard. Both Alexander and Attila feature an iPhone-like touch panel. More importantly, these phones appear to be set for a Q1 2009 release.
Motorola has been building up their Android Development Team, but not comes information regarding an upcoming Social Networking Smart Phone. According to a job posting at Coroflot, the company is recruiting a Senior Staff Interaction Designer for "a new Android Social Networking SmartPhone".
The Moto Q11 has been making the rounds this week with it's release in Brazil and now showing up on Motorola's site. It won't hit the states officially until December of this year, but we'd thought it'd be fun to see how the new Q compares size wise to the iPhone and the Moto Q9h Global. The Moto Q11 appears to be smaller from all angles, which I'm guessing should be more noticeable during an actual hands-on. When Palm made slight changes to it's Treo smartphone, photos just didn't do justice to what appeared to be small changes. You can discuss the newest smartphone from Motorola in our Moto Q11 forum.
Motorola today released the specifications for the Motorola Q11, along with news that the company expects the Moto Q11 to be released in the US in December of this year. Many have bemoaned the omission of 3G, but it appears Motorola is aiming to deliver an nice mix of features at an attractive price point. A recent report said that the average price of smartphones released in the US is $176. Apple's move to reduce the price of the iPhone 3G to $199 has put pressure on vendors to be more aggressive when it comes to pricing their phones. Of course, the devil is in the details with the iPhone 3G, as the overall cost of ownership is higher than the first generation iPhone. Palm has seen great success with their $99 Palm Centro and perhaps that is what Motorola has in mind. On their site, Motorola describes the Motorola Q 11 as: For mobile professionals and consumers who want a fully featured smartphone complete with a QWERTY keypad for fast messaging, easy access to email, location services and multimedia applications, the MOTO Q 11 delivers all of this at an affordable price.
We knew the Motorola Q11 was going to be released in Brazil, but now comes word it will come as soon as tomorrow. ZumoBlog is reporting that the Motorola Q11 will release tomorrow in Brazil on Vivo and Claro. Outside of the lack of 3G (big miss), the specficiations are impressive (WiFi and GPS). Impressive enough to jump from 9 to 11, we're not so sure. The unlocked price is a whopping $899 US. No word yet if this will make it's way to the US.
The Motorola Q11 appears to be close to release, well at least in Brazil. The rumored specifications are surprising to say the least, with the Q11 offering quad-band EDGE and no 3G. We have certainly seen different variants of the Motorola Q series, so it's entirely possible that a 3G version of the Motorola Q11 lands on our shores, if it is indeed slated for a US release.
